About This Project

Immaculate Conception/St. Joseph school involved a new main entrance and administrative office addition, gymnasium addition, new exterior cladding system, and a full gut-renovation of the former Richard E. Byrd Chicago Public School. The project, part of a land swap between CPS and the Archdiocese of Chicago, preserved the core of the former school while improving the design and convert the existing school into a state-of-the-art educational facility.

The minimal floor to floor height and one way concrete slab structure created challenges in respect to installing all new mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems while still providing ceiling heights that were acceptable for a school. The completed renovation of this building provides 4th through 8th grade classrooms, support spaces including a media center, science and computer labs as well as art, music and language classrooms.
